Planners waved through the five tower projects, one of which will become Manchester’s tallest building. Together they will provide nearly 2,400 flats with a development value of around £1bn.
The tallest at 71 storeys, already nicknamed the ‘Lighthouse’ because of its distinctive lantern-style glazing on the upper five floors, will top out Renaker’s Great Jackson Street cluster.
Designed by SimpsonHaugh Architects, this 213m tall skyscraper will deliver 640 flats and feature a public restaurant on its top floor. Below the top glazed floors the unitised facade will give the slender building a distinctive chequered pattern.
Initial estimates suggest this landmark flat-top tower will cost around £235m to build.
The other planning application for Crown Stree phase 3 was also waved through by the planning committee yesterday.
Great Jackson Street cluster with planned and existing building
This consists of two pairs of towers split by Great Jackson Street, one twin set rising to 47 storeys and the other two reaching 51-storeys. Together these buildings will provide for nearly 1,750 flats with lower-level commercial space. The phased building programme is expected to cost over £570m to build.
Once built these will link the Deansgate and Crown Street clusters on the City’s skyline.
Renaker has still to make public the timings of the demolition and construction programme.
